Dorothy has been teaching since 1977, first as a high school math teacher and since 1984 as a full time mathematics lecturer at California State University East Bay in Hayward. Dorothy is also a Certified Flight Instructor. Her love of aviation is illustrated by her dogs’ names. (Aileron, Flaps, Cessna, Piper, and Christy). With Certified Pet Dog Trainer credentials (Animal Behavior College) and a graduate of Trish King’s Canine Behavior Academy, Dorothy has been teaching agility since 2006 and instructing at Jump’n Java since 2009. Dorothy has trained all different types of dogs, but her breed of choice is the Sheltie.
She earned four Masters Agility Championships (MACH) in AKC with her first agility dog, Cessna, who began competing in 2002 and five MACHs with Piper. Career highlights include being a USDAA Performance Grand Prix Finalist with Cessna in 2008, and in 2009 the USDAA Southwest Regional Performance Grand Prix Champion with Piper. In 2010 and 2011 Piper made it into the Challenger Rounds at the AKC National Championships. Dorothy and Piper were 2012 AKC National Championship Finalists. They also were Finalists in the AKC Agility Nationals in 2014 where Piper placed 5th. Rounding out 2014, Piper won the Performance Grand Prix at the USDAA Regionals to become the USDAA 2014 Southwest Regional Performance Grand Prix Champion. In 2016, he was a Steeplechase Performance Finalist at the USDAA Nationals. Having turned 11 years old in January 2017, Piper is now in AKC Preferred and working towards his PACH. Dorothy’s newest agility competitor is Christy (named for the Christen Eagle aerobatic biplane). She has earned her MX and MXJ titles in AKC and is competing at the Masters level, and has won her MACH. Piper and Christy both won their respective USDAA Western Regional Steeplechase finals in 2016. Christy was a finalist in her first AKC Nationals and placed 4th.
